What to Expect from a Psychiatric Evaluation

A psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive assessment conducted by a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). It is designed to give your provider a complete picture of your mental health, history, and goals — forming the foundation of your personalized care plan.

What Happens During the Evaluation?

Your first appointment typically lasts 60 minutes. During this time, your provider will review your current mental health concerns and symptoms, discuss your personal and family mental health history, ask about your medical history and any current medications, explore your life circumstances, relationships, and stressors, and discuss your goals for treatment.

This is a collaborative conversation. There are no right or wrong answers. Your provider is there to listen, understand, and support you.

How to Prepare

Write down your current symptoms and when they started. List any medications you currently take. Note any previous mental health diagnoses or treatments. Think about your goals — what would you like to feel or be able to do differently? Bring any questions you have.

After the Evaluation

At the end of your evaluation, your provider will share their clinical impressions, discuss possible diagnoses, and work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan. This may include therapy, medication, or other supportive services.
